Spring Break has arrived and this time it was off to Savannah and Hilton Head. Awesome day in Savannah today and we started it off right with a trip to Moon River Brewing. If you're like me, your whole life is about throwing references out there, so please indulge me the Chevy Chase scene where he sings Moon River as the proctologist works on him. It's a classic. Don't worry, those two things are mutually exclusive as I have nothing but good reviews for this place.
We were maybe the second patrons in as they opened, so no issues getting seated. The building is right on Bay Street, just down from City Hall. It had plenty of ambiance with a center bar as you walk in and dining to the back and right. There is a large patio just to the right of the photo you see, so outdoor and night time visiting would be perfect.
I started off with a Kilty by Association, which is a Scottish-style ale. It was a smooth drinking beer and you can tell they used British hops as it had that distinct flavor. If you like British beers, you'll like this. They say it has Heather tips in it. I was unable to distinguish that, but my pallet may not be refined enough to know Heather, unless she was my waitress.
I had the Taco-dillas with chicken and I'll be honest, they rated a 10 for me. Tacos can be made or broken by several things. If the tortillas suck or the ingredients are cheap, you can eat it, but it just isn't satisfying. These were fabulous. They take two cheese quesadillas and fold them like tacos, the chicken was in nice size chunks, the chipotle ranch sauce was flavorful. I did add some of their house hot sauce and bam!
I also tried another beer called, That's so Retro. It is their amber ale and it too was a smooth-finish beer. East Kent hops and Irish malt had it moderate on the hoppiness and smooth. I liked it. Now one thing I thought of is that I should be trying these brewery's signature beers, but I did not on this trip. Moon River has two beers that I think would be considered the flagships of the fleet, an IPA named Swamp Fox and a Southern-style pale ale called Yoga Pants. Who doesn't like yoga pants?
One thing I love about Savannah and several other eastern seaboard cities is they are full of history on just about every block. The building that Moon River Brewing is in was built in 1821 as the city's first hotel. Guests included the Marquis de Lafayette, James Audubon and the first three commodores of the US Navy. There is some talk of it being haunted as well. The only thing I didn't like about my visit was they didn't have any t-shirts in my size, so I left empty handed - drats!!
