Built in an old church, The Green Church on the Corner, to be exact, Belfry is tucked away in Old Cottonwood. Repurposed as a brewery and eating establishment, with a new bell in the belfry, by the way, Belfry is a neat and cozy place to grab a beer and some eats.
Unfortunately for me, I wasn't that hungry, but the Belfry was a block from my hotel, so I was naturally drawn to it. I had some wings at the bar and grabbed a beer. I had the Berliner Weisse this time. It was light and crisp. Probably more suited to a warm day or night, I still thought it good. I wanted the Irish Red, but fought my inner beer voice and tried something different. It came in a 10 oz snifter glass, presumably to bring out the raspberry notes. Since I wasn't hungry the drink was suited for me by being light and flavorful. I'll admit, I probably wouldn't drink more than one or two of these because fruity beers tend to work at first and then get too much for me and I drift back to my go-to's, but it worked last night.
The restaurant itself was full of surprises. There was music above the bar playing, but it wasn't very audible and then I could hear what sounded like live music coming from somewhere else. I knew there was a patio so I first thought it was out there, but it sounded more like it was in the basement. I asked and found out there was a live band playing jazz down in a basement bar. I ventured down there and was surprised to find a whole other world. I also found out later that they specialize in wood-fired meats and have a chef hired that has as his expertise, wood fired meats. I regret not waiting to try this out until I was more hungry.
Still, the bartender was fun and the place was busy and had live music too, so I think it is a diamond-in-the-rough. Besides that, the place was cool and stylish, so worth a visit.
