Moxie's Grill & Bar - South Lake, TX

If you like beautiful women and I mean a lot of beautiful women, Moxie's is your place.  Of course, don't get me wrong, the establishment itself is upscale, trendy and has a great menu, but the women....  The entire staff were beautiful women.  I did not see a single male working there, but I wouldn't have noticed them anyways.  If there were any, they are very lucky indeed.  This is obviously a purposeful choice by management, and I applaud that.  I was told this was going to be the case before I went and I was not disappointed.

I flew into Dallas for a one hour meeting with a large client and was on the ground less than 24 hours.  I did spend the entire time with a vendor, so it wasn't a long trip for just one hour.  I did get to tour their facility, which I had wanted to do for years.  After work, I went out for drinks and dinner with several of my colleagues from my vendor and Moxie's was an off-hand suggestion.   Our dinner with the client was cancelled when they could not stay, so it freed up our evening, so we hit a local bar just down the street for two beers and then went off to dinner at Moxie's.

Normally, I don't review many non-brewery establishments, but I couldn't help myself this time.  All the ladies were dressed in black skirts and tops.  The two behind the bar were devastatingly hot, but with upscale clientele and plenty of women patrons, it's not like everyone was a tongue-dragging troglodyte that was in there.  Many were probably locals that were used to this kind of stunning scenery.  Where I'm from, if one or two of the staff is beautiful you don't usually forget it, but here everyone was, so it made it that more memorable.

I started off with a couple of Shannon's Irish Reds.  A very good red with a perfect color and it smelled like roasted malt and caramel, which is exactly what you'd want a red to be.  The carbonation was right and it was flavorful.  After the maltiness settles you get more flavors further into the beer, like the toastyness and caramel.  It was not particularly bitter, but I do not know it's IBU, though it has to be around 25.  Shannon Brewery is a Texas brewhouse that fire-brews their beer.  This was pretty common back in the early days, but very few do it now.  What it does do is make exceptional maltiness from the process of carmelizing the sugars.  I don't know enough about Shannon, but this red has to be their flagship beer.  I would drink it again in an instant.

We tore through a selection of four appetizers, with the Thai Chili Chicken, as the winner.  I then ordered the Steak Frites, which was an 8 ounce prime sirloin that was a pretty thick cut.  Pink throughout, it has a chimichurri sauce on it, and it was delicious.  I ended with a Canadian beer called, Kingsville Hefeweizen.  It was the only other beer on tap that I had not had before, so I tried it.  It was decent, but maybe too much carbonation for me.  I expect a Hefe to be this way, but coming off the reds, it was probably the wrong choice.  In fairness though, as far as Hefeweizen's are concerned, it was clean and crisp and you could really pick up a banana and clove flavor. after a few sips.  On a warmer night or hot day it would be refreshing.  Since I had a 6am flight, that was it for me.  I went off to bed with visions of Texas beauties in my head.  I caught my 5 am shuttle to the airport and stupidly went into work when I got back in town, thus breaking Rule # 2 in business travel.  Never go back in the office after you get back from a trip.  Let everyone think you got back in the afternoon or later.  Drats!
